Nashville Truck Accident Statistics

Although truck accidents are not the most common type of auto accident in the U.S., they are often the most serious. Truck accident statistics indicate the true severity of a trucking accident, as well as what party is more likely to suffer injury. I have compiled some helpful information regarding trucking accident statistics in order to help you better understand the circumstances of your Nashville truck accident. I also welcome you to contact my law offices if you are interested in speaking directly with an attorney about this important matter.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) a large truck is a vehicle with a gross total weight of more than 10,000 pounds. This may include various big rigs, semi trucks, tractor-trailersdelivery trucks or other commercial vehicles. The NHTSA compiles traffic-related accident statistics on a regular basis, and following are the nationwide statistics from 2008:

  • There were 308,000 large trucks involved in traffic accidents.
  • More than 4,000 of these were involved in fatal traffic accidents.
  • 11% of traffic fatalities reported were associated with truck accidents, with a total of 4,229 people losing their lives in these collisions.
  • Approximately 90,000 people were injured in accidents with large trucks.
  • Of the fatalities caused by multi-vehicle truck accidents, 6.5% were occupants of the large truck. The rest were occupants of other vehicles or non-occupants (pedestrians or bicyclists).
  • Of the injuries caused by multi-vehicle truck accidents, 16.25% were occupants of the large truck.

In Tennessee, there were 92 large trucks involved in fatal accidents in 2008. This accounted for 6.7% of the total number of vehicles involved in fatal traffic collisions.
